Most teams treat social media as a publishing channel: write the post, hit schedule, move on. They're doing half the work — and it's the less effective half. The compounding lives in the part most people skip: engagement.
Why engagement matters
Every comment, reply and interaction does two jobs. It signals to the platform that your content is worth showing to more people, and it builds an actual relationship with a real human on the other end. A thoughtful reply to a prospect's comment will do more for your pipeline than another polished post into the void.
The half nobody does
Publishing feels productive; engagement feels like a distraction. So it gets dropped first when the week gets busy. But engagement is where trust is actually built — in the replies, in showing up usefully in someone else's comments, in being a participant rather than a billboard. The firms that win treat the twenty minutes after publishing as part of the post, not an optional extra.
A post starts the conversation. Whether anything comes of it depends on what you do in the comments afterwards. The Six Pillars · Engage
How to engage well
- Reply to every comment, properly. Not "thanks!" — a real response that moves the conversation forward.
- Go to where your audience already is. Comment thoughtfully on the posts of clients, partners and people in your sector.
- Be early. The first hour after publishing is when engagement matters most. Be present for it.
- Add, don't applaud. "Great post" adds nothing. A genuine question or a different angle gets you noticed.
Without it eating your day
The fear is that engagement is a bottomless time sink. It isn't, if it's bounded. A focused fifteen to twenty minutes a day — once after you publish, once on others' content — is plenty for most service businesses. The trick is to make it a small, scheduled habit rather than an all-day temptation. A little, consistently, beats a marathon once a month.

A consultant we coached doubled the reach of her own posts without changing what she wrote — simply by spending fifteen minutes engaging thoughtfully in her network's comments each morning. The visibility she built by showing up in other people's conversations fed straight back into her own.
